Windows uses NTFS and Mac uses HFS. Windows PC and Mac use different filesystems. You may also format your external drive into FAT32 for use.Need to format an external hard drive for Mac and Windows. In fact, I’ve done it myself. This is the best solution Seagate offers for transferring data between Windows and Mac computers. Most of the time, your Mac computer will recognize the external hard drive once you plug it into the USB port, and the external hard drive will be automatically mounted so that you can access data on In most cases, the answer is a resounding yes. External hard drives are usually used to back up a large amount of data or to extend the capacity of our computers.
External Hard Drive And Pc Interchangeable Install Directly IntoThings to watch forThere are a few things to be aware of before you crack open that box, however. So yes, open the case and you’ll likely find a standard hard drive you can then install directly into your PC. Depending on the drive, there might be an external power supply, or “ brick”. The world is definitely moving towards cloud storage and USB.Inside that external hard drive is an internal hard drive. Most external hard drives are simply standard hard drives in a box with an additional circuit board that converts their native interface to USB. So, if you want to use an external hard drive on both Windows and Mac, you need to format it to a filesystem that is compatible with Windows PC and Mac.However, there are a few caveats to be aware of.I recently built my PC and I noticed that even the newer cases dont have slots for a DVD drive. This normally limits you to 3-1/2-inch drives, though some computers accept 2-1/2-inch drives. Make sure the physical size of the drive matches what your computer can use. The two are not interchangeable. Most computers and drives now use the SATA interface, but if you have an older computer or drive, you might be faced with an IDE interface. Be sure it has the correct interface. After you break the seal and open the box, you’re on your own. There’s one less external box to deal with, and the drive will probably operate faster internally than across a USB interface. There’s one additional scenario worth considering: external drive failure. When to considerMoving an external drive into a PC is generally done as a convenience. Can I Use an Internal Hard Drive from an Old Machine as an External Drive on a New One? covers the topic. Drive speed is typically not a limiting factor when placed behind a USB interface, and slower drives also run cooler, reducing the need for an external drive to include powerful cooling fans, or perhaps any fan at all. While moving an external drive into a computer is possible, the reverse is actually much more common: moving an internal drive into an external USB enclosure. My expectation is that drive manufacturers use their slower drives in external boxes. It probably won’t be one of your faster drives. ![]() I did not open the case so I do not know what the interface is, I suspect it is SATA. I used a seagate 320Gb laptop drive as an internal backup drive in my Windows Home Server. My take on how to deal with that goes contrary to popular opinion.1: These have actually become easier to find of late, since most SSDs are 2-1/2-inch form factor and need such a mounting converter to be installed in a desktop machine that expects 3-1/2-inch.In: Hard Drives (HDD) This is an update to an article originally posted August 19, 2007Shortlink: Tagged: external drive, hard drive enclosure, IDE, internal hard drive, SATAYes you can connect a USB as an internal drive. I'll review some of my top issues.Managing Brick Risk - A small number of users will have problems with recent Windows Updates. ![]() ![]() Also, the height is like 15mm, luckily my Alienware laptop has enough space to hold a drive that thick, but it does not have enough space lengthwise to fit with an adapter. However, without the new PCB there is just not enough room. If I had a converter, I could use it in a desktop with a 2.5-3.5 adapter. Short of a converter, I would need a whole new PCB / Logic Board to use this drive as an internal. ReplyI have the same issue, the USB connector is on the hard drive’s PCB board, and there are no SATA connectors? It’s 2012, and I know stuff changes, but I bought the drive with the hopes of taking it out of the external case and putting it inside my laptop. There are many resources on the net to figure out the wiring. It makes the connection noise when I plug it in, but the file doesn’t show up and a few seconds later I get the disconnect noise. It has about 1.5 Tb of files on it and like an idiot I hadn’t backed it up in a while. The closest thing and possibly the drive I would need to swap the PCB for is WD20NPVT, but I have not found any articles with someone trying this or any success? Please help whoever can shed some light on a way to fix my situation?TL:DR If I convert an external hard drive to an internal drive with data already on it, will it delete my data?Hi, I have a Seagate Backup Plus 5Tb External Hard Drive that suffered a malfunction (ironically as I was in the middle of backing it up on a new drive) and now it won’t connect to my PC via USB. Before you Google that P/N, it is never sold outside of the combo package as a stand alone drive. BTW: My drive is a Western Digital (WD) MyPassport 2TB model, the internal drive model number is WD20NMVW. Finally, IPlugged the drive up internally via SATA. So, I removed the drive from its original casing and tried it in another identical casing, hoping the Sata-to-USB adapter in the casing was what died, but that didn’t seem to work either. I ran through the standard troubleshoot checklist for it, but no good. Create usb installer for mac appI know there’s data recovery software out there and specialists that can recover it, but I was hoping I could sort this out on my own (for free) before resorting to those avenues. I wanted to double check if this is true, since I’m only interested in recovering the data, after which I have no need for the drive (assuming its damaged). It sounds like initializing it won’t delete the data, but I would need to create a new partition afterwards to access the drive, and it sounds like that will definitely delete the data. I read up what I could on this, but I’m still a bit hazy on it.
